END OF THE YEAR UPDATE

hey guys

sorry for the lack of updates on this thing. we (i) still havent really decided how we're going to use this as far as updates with the band goes, but i know that there are a few things that some people are probably wondering about as far as our band is concerned. so i figured i'd throw some light on some subjects.

when is the album coming out?

probably our most asked question. to tell you guys the truth, it's a pretty well asked question from us too. at the moment we have finished recording all nine tracks that will appear on the album. we have also completed all of the artwork for the album. right now we are working with our producer/label owner/ex-member/friend/lover mike york on getting each track sounding the way that we intended each of them to sound. it has turned into a long, educational, and rewarding process. because of various time constraints and decisions, the release of the album has taken a little longer than all of us originally anticipated. we definitely want to stress that this is because we are trying to get the best product out of our recording and are working hard with mike before we send the tracks out for mastering. we're working on setting a booking a date for our release show and mike/229 records are working out the details of the album presale. when details for both are finalize we'll definitely announce it.

when are you guys touring?

at the moment we have a weekend tour of VA an NC coming up this weekend with our friends in oedipus. everyone in both bands are really excited for this and we're looking forward to bringing our music to new audiences, meeting some new people, and hearing from some new bands. in march, we have some out of town dates with sweden's screamo sweethearts suis la lune. as of yet, we only have two dates with suis, but are contemplating the idea of building a weekend tour around those dates. other than that, there is talk amongst us of a week long tour this summer along with several weekend tours here and there.

ha, i guess those are really the only two questions i can think of. we definitely want to thank everyone who has supported us throughout our first year as a band and we look forward to everything that is in store for us in 09.

late with the updates

hey guys

sorry there havent been too many updates recently. im really the only one who posts right now and ive been really busy with work and what not and band things had to take a bit of a break on the back burner. but as always, a really good show will put me back in the mood to get on top of things. last night we played a halloween show with a bunch of local bands in addition to war of ages and advent. the show was really good. there were tons of kids out and we had the pleasure to playing to a room full of listeners. all in all, we feel like we were received really well and made some new fans which equals a success for us. for now we dont have any shows booked for a couple of months, but im hoping to work on that pretty soon. im really hoping that we can do either a weekend away or day out of state this month or next. if anyone in PA, VA, DE, or NY has anything happening soon let us know!

also we got these in the mail yesterday:

Photobucket
if you read this, you'll recognize this slogan. to explain, "i dont care if the world ends tomorrow..." was something that jon said at a show we were playing. tommy was really obsessed at the time with the hadron collider and it's either matter making or world ending capabilities. it was possible that this thing could have created a black hole and ended the world all together. jon, with his infinite wisdom remarked "i dont care if the world ends tomorrow, as long as i dont have to go to school." it just happened to be one of those things that gets said and repeated and laughed about later on. i thought that it was really funny out of context and kind of relevant in the context of the band and it's name so it kinda stuck, with me atleast. so our merch table is a little less bare now. be sure to pick one up for FREE next time you see us and stick it on your guitar case, skateboard, mom's car, school locker, stop sign, etc.

something else that you guys will be stoked to hear is that we have finished tracking everything except for vocals for the new album! i was only able to make it to tommy and jon's sessions but from what i hear everything sounds really great. we should be recording vocals sometime this week. all in all, we're working on having this out before the end of the year so be on the look out!

THIS JUST IN!!!

while i was editing this post, i got a message from justin saying that we just got added onto a show with SUIS LA LUNE! hopefully all of you know about this band and can understand how excited we are for this show. if you dont...suis la lune is a screamo band out of stockholm, sweden. currently they are the only band in our top friends who we havent played with (not for much longer!). this band has had a huge influence on a16 (especially in the beginning) mostly just from being a few of our's favorite bands. if you truly enjoy good screamo music, visit their website and listen to some of their songs off their album "quiet, pull the strings." when i first heard this it was after a history of unexposure to actual good screamo music. there's so much i can say about this album, but you just have to listen to it for yourself to figure it out. either way, this is big news! the show is going to be with the AMAZING dudes in ezra joyce (a screamo two piece whom we have had the pleasure to play with a couple of times) in their hometown of mays landing, new jersey. wow, a powerhouse european screamo band is going to be playing a HOUSE SHOW in new jersey of all places. ezra joyce rules and so does their house and so will this show so be sure to start making plans now on how you're going to road trip it out there to see it.

seriously...dont sleep on this!

studio session #2

hey guys

sooo we went back in the studio on wednesday to record justin's guitars. unfortunately, most of the band wasnt present including myself so there's no video :-( BUT justin did finish all of his guitar tracks so we are slowly inching our way towards the end of this process. we still have a lot ahead of us, but are all really excited about it too. we're planning on going back into the studio next friday to record jon's guitar part and then we'll just have to do jer's slick bass lines and then duh duh duhhhhh vocals. there's a lot of work to be done be we all have so much faith in our producer mike and also in each other so we arent too worried about it.

our past couple of shows were really great and we really enjoyed and appreciated all of the bands that we played with. big thanks again to the blue letter from richmond, va and vikings and settlers from hagerstown for a great show thursday. also a very huge thanks to everyone in frederick (especially david krasner) for the amazingly great times we had at a show that had a hard time sticking to a venue. it got moved out of two venues only to end up as a basement show one of the best kind around!

right now we have this show coming up on HALLOWEEN. we WILL be playing in costume and you too can join in by wearing a costume and winning one of the prizes they'll be giving out. war of ages and advent are headlining and we have tickets that you should BUY FROM US for only $8! we're not on this flyer but we are definitely playing so come check it out!

THIS WEEK

we have two awesome shows coming up.

the first is on thursday at the sidebar in baltimore with the blue letter (VA), (children are the) settlers, and vikings!

i saw the blue letter last month with ...who calls so loud at the barclay house. they are an amazing three piece out of richmond, va. fast, high energy with screeching vocals. i picked up a 7" of theirs and im really enjoying it. both CATS and vikings! are out of hagerstown, md. we met CATS when they were simply "settlers" at a show at the ottobar. definitely one of the most somber, saddest, and heart felt performances that i had seen in awhile. watching them is almost like watching a dying animal on the side of the road. it makes you really uncomfortable, but it's also really intriguing and interesting at the same time. we met the boys in vikings! at our second show. these guys are nuts, full of energy and explosive. these guys love music and take the time to write tunes which emulate all of the screamo and emo music they deafen their ears with everyday im sure.

our second show is a sunday matinee on october 12th

the hagerstown/frederick scene is really something else. we were first contacted by vikings to play a show they and some other people were setting up. they had some how found us on myspace and really dug what we were doing. we agreed to play and it was scheduled to be our first show. at the last minute we were asked to play another show before this one, but we played in hagerstown for our second. what we encountered was a thriving scene full of tons of kids who you could tell that music was their life. they were all so welcoming and excited to see us that it was almost a little nerve racking (mind you this was our second show). the show ended up being great and we met tons of great people and made a bunch of new friends. we really look forward to returning to that scene this sunday and hope to have just as much fun as we did the first time we rolled through there.

more information on both shows can be found on our myspace where we also have two shirts available for sale right now. either shirt is $15 w/ shipping included. order off our myspace or save some money and pick one up at a show

OUF,P Recording Session #1

so on friday we went into the studio for our first session with our producer mike york to track the drums for our new album. it was a good time and really successful session where we managed to get the drums tracked for all nine songs. our drummer tommy really stepped up to the plate and killed all of the tracks. tommy is an amazing musician. he studied at berkley and has played drums in tons of different bands, he even tried out to play in tera melos. he also plays guitar and keys and works on various other projects along with his own acoustic solo project. we are really happy to have tommy as a drummer. he came to the band after we hadnt had a drummer for months, took the ideas that we had already laid down with our first drummer and just applied his own flair and style to it. tommy is definitely an experience too, since he has hyper ADD. when you think about it, drums are pretty much the best instrument for a guy like tommy who constantly has to touch or mess things up. as you'll see from this video i shot he can be a little hard to work with at times, but once you get him at the kit he really is something else. *DISCLAIMER* tommy is completely deaf in his left ear, hence all of his repeating questions.

i edited this movie with imovie, which sucks, so the quality is a little crappy, but you guys will get the idea.

RECORDING

big news! tomorrow we will be officially entering the studio to begin recording our upcoming album, Open Up Finders, Please ! we are all so very excited about this. we have all worked a lot to get to this point and are glad that it is finally here. tomorrow we will begin tracking the drums and are told by our producer/love guru Mike York that the rest will be downhill from there. im hoping to have some sort of camera there so that we can give you guys updates on our progress and such. if you are familiar with the recording process, you understand that it is a long and grueling one. none of us are one's to settle on something so we're prepared to do what it takes to make this thing amazing for us to hear and more importantly amazing for you guys to hear as well. be on the lookout for more updates here.

also, we were just featured on a blog of some friends of ours. they play in a band called VIKINGS! out of hagerstown, md. we first met these guys at our second show (which was actually supposed to be our first show) up in hagerstown. somehow they found us online and asked if we wanted to play a show they were setting up and it's been love ever since. we all love everything and everyone out of hagerstown and nearby frederick. the scene in both of those areas is really thriving and giving baltimore a run for it's money. these kids live out in the middle of nowhere and starve for music while i can pretty much throw a stone at several decent venues here in baltimore from my house. either way check out their blog called chug life where they review us and several other bands that they think are important and think that you should know about. these guys are doing a great job and we're not just saying that because we're playing a couple of shows with them next week *WINK*

new song!

we just posted a new song on our myspace today. it's a demo version of a song called "in lieu of" which will be featured on a compilation from a record company called Zommerkamp out of Mexico. we are all really excited about this compilation mainly b/c of some of the other bands featured on it (Louise Cyphre, the Caution Children, Straight No Chaser, etc), we're hoping to get some copies of it and will let you guys know if and when that happens.

the song we posted is called "in lieu of." it's our sixth and shortest song. when we talk about it, we always call it the "tropical song" b/c of jer's bass line in the beginning of the song. i typically cover different topics within the same song just b/c im pretty ADD when i write i guess. i start the song off talking about an encounter i had with a girl in passing that really just made my day. it lasted about .5 sec, but it really brightened up my day. no words were exchange, just a smile. the rest of the song kind of goes through a scenario that i played in my head if this girl and i had actually had a thing. the song ends with the question "if she would have stayed, what kind of man would i be?" referring to an actual relationships that ive had and questioning what kind of person i'd be right now if i had actually staying in them.

pretty weird right?

either way, it's a fun song to perform b/c it's really fast and there's a lot going on. justin's and my lyrics kind of overlap each other a couple of times and we always talk about different things in each song so it has a bunch of layers to it.

be sure to take some time to listen to it and maybe even read the lyrics.

Tour '09

we are going to start off the new year right and go out on the road with our friends in oedipus. we met the dudes in oedipus at the summer so far benefit show and immediately fell in love. oedipus live is like a roller coaster. their set starts with a bang full of noise and screams taking you up and down. suddenly the ride stops and you're left in this limbo reminiscent of some kind of white noise and then without warning they come back in full force to finish you off, leaving you wishing for more. these guys are truly a treat to watch live and (even better) awesome dudes away from the stage. we're really looking forward to this trip and are looking for shows/will be playing in the following areas:

JAN 1st:  Somewhere in/around Richmond, VA
JAN 2nd: Somewhere in/around Greensboro, NC
JAN 3rd: The Spazz House (Greenville, NC)
JAN 4th: The Red Shed (Annandale, VA)

if you can help us in any way, we would really appreciate it!

we're always looking to play some shows in nearby states so if you've got something, let us know.

FAQs

hey guys we decided to do the blog thing in order to have a better way to keep you guys updated on band news rather than flooding your myspaces with posting tons of bulletins. either way i decided to start things off with some questions we've been asked and others i think you guys wouldnt mind hearing.

what does age sixteen mean?
the short answer is that it doesnt really mean anything. we were looking for a name and couldnt find anything that we all could settle on. one night after practice i was sitting in justin's office watching tv when some infomercial came on and said something like "mary, age sixteen." i thought age sixteen sounded cool and said it out loud to justin who thought it sounded cool too. he went into the other room to ask jer what he thought, but he was half asleep and didnt want to hear anything. we asked mike (who was in the band at the time) and he liked it so we went with it. after jer woke up he realized how much he loved it and age sixteen was born.

when i thought more about the name, i thought about how appropriate it was for our music. personally at sixteen, i was really emotional, sporadic, unpredictable, and energetic...all things that really reminded me of our music.

how long have you guys been a band?
we started practicing as a group back in february. justin and mike wanted to start a band that was reminiscent of the european screamo sound (raein, la quiete, suis la lune, etc.). jer had played with jus in a perfect kiss and wanted to get back in music again so he was asked. colin's old band, branch breaker had just broken up and justin asked him to jump on drum. i had mentioned to justin that i had wanted to do something with a band so he asked if i wanted to try it out and i said yes.

later on, colin would be replaced with tommy and mike with jon and we've had that line up since june. soo as the group we are now, we've been together since june.

do you have any demos left?
sadly enough, we do not. we made a limited pressing of 100 demos that we passed out at shows and mailed out to those who ordered them off of our myspace. HOWEVER, you can download all of the songs off of the demo from our myspace.

when is the album coming out?
our debut album titled Open Up Finders, Please will be released through 229 Records hopefully by the end of the year. it will feature nine songs in total. we have completed demo versions of all songs (one of which will be featured on a compilation through Zomerkamp Records) and are currently planning on getting back into the studio very soon. we hope to schedule studio time by the end of this month. after the tracks are recorded and mixed, they will be mastered and then pressed! we will most likely have a CD release party as well.

got any merch?
very soon. we have an order of shirts which should be arriving soon. they will be available at shows and through our myspace.

when are/can you play in my area?
we love both meeting new people and playing for different crowds. we take all show inquiries seriously and weigh all of the pros and cons of playing each show. if you would like for us to play in your town, please consider the cost that it would take for us to get there. gas, as we all know, is HIGHHH and we need to make sure that we'll get compensated for the  trek that it takes to get out to you. of course we have merch and whatnot to help, but guarantees or proceeds from door donations really go a LONG way. either way, if you really want us to come and can set up a legitimate show, contact us either through myspace or agesixteenband@gmail.com

aren't you guys in that godspeed sounding band?
haha, yes. both justin and jon play guitar and bass, respectively in sawhorse. they also play drums and vocals in surf nazis on ecstasy. justin in tommy play in batcomputer.

well those are a few of the questions ive been asked. if you guys have any more questions, please feel free to ask them and we'll do our best to answer 'em for you.
